One bright, sunny day, an elderly woman was walking down a dusty road on an ancient woodland. She could smell the green forest around her.

She looked up and suddenly, there before her very eyes, appeared a magical kingdom with a massive waterfall emanating a myriad of heart-shaped, colourful mist. “Wow,” she says. “What is this? What is this place?”
00:47
She hitched up her skirt and strolled into the bubbling pool. She was filled with excitement as the bubbles danced around her ankles.

Some nostalgia took over as she remembered being there many, many years ago with her children. She saw the sun glittering through the massive, towering trees, the leaves blowing in the wind; the birds chirping as they flew from tree to tree; the tiny golden frogs hopping on the ground. She gazed up in wonderment at Mother Nature, so untouched and so unspoiled.

The feeling was suddenly interrupted when she heard a sound. She looked around and saw something glistening in the dark corner. Then she strolled up to it and found that it was a green pea. She took the pea, wrapped it in a tissue and put it in her pocket.

Emerald tells a magical, cumulative story in which one gift leads to another. Its repeated exchanges explore generosity, reciprocity and the importance of helping others without knowing what will be received in return.
The performance centres on an elderly woman and her animal companion, Marion the goat, and concludes with the spoken moral: “The more you give, the more you get.” No specific traditional origin is identified in the storyteller’s supplied document, so it should not be attributed to a particular culture or folktale tradition without further confirmation.
